Throw Up and Broken Bones

So, I feel like I am failing miserably at keeping up regular posts. My intent is to use this as a journal, but maybe it will be a picture journal...you know...when I get around to posting pics. Here's another information dump.

Isaac is now 14 months old and quite the little ham. This kid will do anything for a laugh...I mean ANYTHING. One night in the bath Isaac discovered that it cracks Eli up when he gags himself. So he did it enough that he started throwing up. And he just kept on laughing, both boys did, and he just kept gagging himself too. Gross. At least they were already in the bath tub.

He is always on the move and always looking for a way to entertain us. It's really fun, but can be a bit difficult during, say, church when I am desperately trying to get him to sit still...or at least stay contained by our chairs. I've been spending a lot of time out in the halls at church lately.

He's also still very social, and loves saying "Hi" to almost anyone who he sees, and most animals too, although he favors dogs the most, or that's just what we see out on our walks the most. Isaac's vocabulary is really expanding, and I'm a little amazed at all the words he's saying. He will try to repeat almost any word we say, or combination of words, and though it's not clear I can even get him to try to say, "I love you" which just melts this momma's heart. He's taken to saying "thank you" sometimes when we give him something, and even will add an occasional "amen" at the end of a prayer. He says Eli's name as "E-I", which I love.

Eli loves it too. He is probably the best big brother in the world. He is just enthralled with his little Isaac, and now with Baby Sister as well. (Yes, we're having a GIRL!) These boys share a room and when they wake up in the morning Eli climbs into Isaac's crib so they can play together...which often involves Eli throwing all his pillows, blankets, and every stuffed animal they have into the crib first, but it's still pretty cute. Plus when they are really good I can even stay in bed for a half hour or so while they just play together.

Eli is having a fantastic time at preschool and absolutely loves doing homework. He gets sad when he finishes it and always asks if there is more. At this age, there's a lot of coloring, cutting, and pasting, and it's the basic letters and numbers that he already knows, but I sure hope this love continues throughout his life. It helps that he's sort of brilliant as well. He also played on a neighborhood soccer team this fall and absolutely loved it. What's not to love about running around and kicking a ball non-stop, right? He is my boy after all! He was a little hesitant at first (unlike Isaac, Eli is still quite shy and reserved, though he is coming out of his shell more and more), but his cousin Claire was also playing and that helped him get right in there for the first game. Once he figured out how fun it was, he's been loving it ever since. This week is his last game and I don't know how to break that news to him. He's going to be bummed. It's on a 3-5 year old league, and he's actually one of the better players, even if he is one of the younger ones too.

Sorry for all the bragging. My blog, my rules, my family to brag about.

In other news, Mike has been quite athletic lately as well. He's gotten into mountain biking, and immediately got right back out...with the help of a broken shoulder. He crashed and landed on his shoulder, dislocating it on a trail on South Mountain, and called me from the hospital. Boy that was a surprising phone call. At first we thought it was just dislocated, so he went out riding again two weeks later, and out it came again, which clued us in to it being more than just a simple dislocation. Yep, it turns out he actually smashed it to pieces...literally: one impact fracture with bone marrow swelling, one large chunk of bone broken off the scapula (which is why the dang thing kept dislocating), and some torn cartilage. Two weeks ago he had shoulder surgery and now he's sporting a nice long scar and a handsome sling, and we're enjoying lots of Daddy time because he can't even go back to work for a few more weeks. Can you say, Ouch!

Let's see, Mike also has a new calling. He's a gospel doctrine teacher. One of many in our ward because our ward is so big I think we have four gospel doctrine classes. But he's the best, of course! And he gets to teach in the biggest classroom, so clearly the best, in my humble opinion. Of course, I've never actually been to one of his lessons, or even been to gospel doctrine for years because I'm still the Primary secretary, now on my third primary presidency in two years because our ward does keep splitting, and yet it's still huge. I think I'm on my fourth year in primary now.

And, of course, the most important news of all, we're having a baby girl! Eli is pretty excited, he talks about Baby Sister all the time. "Did you know Baby Sister is a sweetheart?" "Did you know I love Baby Sister?" "Baby Sister is a child of God." Yeah, it's awesome. I can't believe we'll be having another baby in three months. Isaac is still my baby, although I don't think he thinks so. He's independent and adventurous and absolutely happy to play and explore with his big brother. This little girl is going to be lucky to have two awesome big brothers to look out for her, and we are all so excited to meet her soon! Mike has already started buying her outfits on line...he is the shopper and fashionable one, after all.

One Crazy Summer

So, I like to think we are generally healthy. Eli never really got sick as a baby. He'd get colds, but it was always things we could manage. Somehow that all caught up to us this summer. I'm pretty sure we've had everything imaginable.

These boys have been through ear infections (yes, multiple), diarrhea (twice), flu, colds, pink eye, hand-foot-mouth, ring worm, ear tubes, and now balanoposthitis.

Add to that my morning sickness all summer, and I feel like something has been spewing out of one of us almost every day. And we're all constantly exhausted and cranky. Except Mike. He's somehow managed to stay healthy through all of this. Maybe he's the cause . . . hmm . . .

School Time!

Eli started preschool this week. We thought it would be good for him to get some independent time from mommy. There's a lady in our neighborhood that has an awesome preschool she does out of her home called Little Sprouts Preschool. Eli's cousin went there and tons of people from church go there, so we felt really good about sending him to this preschool.

Eli and I had gone and met Ms. Nicole and seen her house, and she had an open house last Friday for all the kids and parents to come and get familiar with the school and meet each other. Eli was really excited to go, and also pretty nervous. I was a little bit worried about how he'd do that first day, if he'd cry or hold on to me and not let me leave, so we've been talking up the preschool for weeks, telling him about all the friends that will be there and all the cool things they will learn like letters and numbers. He loves letters and numbers (and really knows all the letters and sounds, and numbers up to 20) so he doesn't need preschool for learning as much as for having a fun social experience outside of the home.
He was determined to wear his Dbacks hat. The shoes, however, never made it to preschool. He tired tennis shoes first, then these, then decided he just wanted to wear his old $3 Target flip flops. So much for getting him new school shoes!

Finally convinced him to take the hat off for a pic.

With his school bag, all ready to go! He decided the windowsill would be the best place for a picture . . . and some climbing.

After his first day of preschool I was asking how it was. He was so happy and had a fantastic time. He said it was really fun and he played with lots of friends. Then, later in the day he said, "Mom, we didn't learn about numbers at preschool." So I asked if he learned about letters. He said, "No, we just learned names." He tone was so funny, like I had completely misled him. I didn't realize he was planning on learning it all on the first day, but am so glad he was aware of what they were learning and is looking forward to learning more. Here's to more fun learning days at preschool!

Life As We Know It

Life seems to be flying by right now. It might have something to do with two active kiddos who like to, "Go, go, go!" It's hard to say. I've been writing blog posts in my head for months, usually around 2 in the morning when I'm up with Isaac. Yes, the Isaac who just turned 11 months old. No, he's not sleeping through the night yet. So maybe life isn't flying by as much as I'm just sleepwalking through it. Yeah, that's about right.

Whatever the case, these two boys are adorably awesome . . . and awesomely adorable! And they do seem to keep me busy. So I'm just going to update on their cuteness and fill the rest of these lost months with tons of pictures. Those really do the talking anyway.

Isaac is now working on his ninth and tenth teeth. And I do mean working, as he likes to BITE when he's teething. The proof is on my arms, and chin, and fingers, and pretty much anything he can get in his mouth. He still loves to play peek-a-boo, says and waves "Hi," and is becoming quite the noisy little boy. He's moved on from saying "mama" all the time to favoring "DADA! DADA!" It has increased in volume and excitement. He's also trying out "baba," although I'm not sure if he really knows what it means. I weaned him a few weeks ago, so he does get bottles now and actually might be saying that one. He saves "mama" for when he's really cranky and I can't pick him up. Then he follows me around crying until I can save him. Such drama for such a little guy.

He is still as adorable as ever, and I am still amazed at the number of people who comment on his cuteness. I get stopped several times whenever we are out for people to ohh and ahh over his cuteness. He's still super social, but is definitely starting to feel a bit of stranger danger when new people are around. He'll be friendly as long as I'm holding him or close by. He is also so close to walking! He cruises everything-couches, tables, any furniture, toys, walls-everything . . . even me. He loves to hold on to my legs and walk around with me while I'm trying to make dinner in the kitchen. It's adorable, but does slow down the process a bit. Isaac can actually take a step, and he can stand for a full minute (at least!) on his own, though he doesn't seem to know it. I'm over the crawling and ready for him to walk. It's much cleaner!

Plus, I don't think he could get into more trouble than he does already. He's discovered opening all the cupboards, and already decided the ones will glass bowls and vases are his favorite. Looks like we may have to childproof our house after all, Eli never got into that stuff! Now, as for his not sleeping through the night, I admit it's partially my fault. But Isaac's had constant ear infections that it's hard to have him cry it out when he might be sick or in pain. But that is all coming to an end! He'll be getting tubes in his ears on August 10th, then we'll let the screaming begin! I am determined to have him sleeping through the night by the time he is one. This getting up twice a night because he wants to eat is getting a bit ridiculous . . . and I'm getting A LOT cranky. So really, it's in the best interest of the family that we do this. Honest.

Now for Eli, the one who does actually sleep through the night, just not always in his own bed. Since I've been sick and exhausted and not sleeping and pregnant. Yes, I'm pregnant, did I mention that? Well, since then, I've been pretty much passing out at scripture time. And Eli's been right there with me. I think Mike figures he might as well let sleeping babies lie, so we've been having slumber parties in our bed on many nights. When you're desperate for sleep, you don't really care about these other things.

Eli is getting so tall, and smart, and grown up! He is just hilarious to be around and talk to all day. And in the last couple months he's gotten into the "Why?" stage. This, while wearing at times, really is fun. It makes me have to think about how to explain things, and I really just love that he wants to understand the world around him. But when the questions don't end even after the explanation I say, "Why do you think, Eli?" And he laughs and says, "I don't think, Mommy!" He sure is a silly boy.

He is full of energy, too. There is a reason he stays so thin . . . and strong. He just doesn't stop moving. It's killing him that the summer is so hot. He is desperate to go outside and play. We can't wait for the cooler days of fall so we can go on walks again and spend our mornings at the park. We might also need a pool in the backyard too. He is still a little shy, but is definitely coming out of his shell more, especially with other kids around. Not so much with adults, he'd prefer not to talk to them. And I think that's just fine. I don't have to worry about stranger danger as much just yet.

As always, Eli is still in love with cars. All cars. We spend our days playing cars, racing cars, watching cars, talking about cars, and cleaning cars up. I don't think this kid will ever have enough cars. He just loves them, and he's learning a lot about them too. It's pretty funny that a three year old can identify a Ferrari and Lamborghini, loves to find Mustangs while we drive around, and can tell you if a car has an engine in the front or the back. I'm sure he knows much more than that, but my car knowledge is limited here. He still loves the British show Top Gear and now knows the three hosts names. I'm not sure that's a good thing, but it's his favorite show. He won't watch a lot of kids shows, "Because they're too scary for me. I need to watch Top Gear." His words. So cute.

Eli and Isaac absolutely love each other. Isaac is learning to love cars just like Eli does. He actually drives them around and makes a little "brrrrrrrrrrmmmm" noise like Eli does. They are still a three year old and eleven month old, and Isaac almost lost a tooth because of that last night. Sharing isn't something they've totally figured out yet. But there really is no doubt they love each other, even if boys will be boys at times.

Now, for that comment I made above. It's true. I'm bringing out the Irish in me . . . as in Irish twins! Baby #3 is due February 16th, which means we'll probably have the c-section a week earlier than that. So he and Isaac will be just over 17 months apart. Phew! That's a little close! We are all excited, although my excitement shows through in vomit, exhaustion, and overall discomfort. Once this morning sickness goes away (you know, once the baby is born) I'll feel much better. Yay! And yes, we are calling baby #3 a he, because we don't know any different right now. Are we hoping for a he, yes, but are we also hoping for a she, yes. I know boys. I have boy stuff. It would be easy. But this is probably our last kid, and it might be cool to have a girl too. She would have awesome big brothers, and would probably help keep them in line too. So really, we just want a healthy little baby. And no more morning sickness. But we'll take the healthy baby over all else.

Father's Day

This year for Father's Day Mike got surprises that came in threes.

Three caramel apples.

Three Defiant trucks.

And THREE pairs of hands saying, "I love you THIS much!" Yes, three pairs of hands becuase, SURPRISE! I'm pregnant!

He also got a very appropriate shirt from me that says, "I'm kind of a "BIG DEAL" around here."

And I made an awesome french toast breakfast, and what I'm really proud of, an even more awesome dinner of filet bryan, zucchini from our garden, and asparagus. I nailed the sauce on the filet bryan this time. It was perfect! Then we topped it off with some delicious chocolate cream cheese cupcakes.

So yes, I'm pregnant. We're all a little surprised and overwhelmed...or maybe that's just me. Due date is mid February and I am just starting to get the queasies all day long. Bring on the morning sickness!

Since Isaac was born we've asked Eli if he wants another brother or sister, and he'd say, "Yes! FIVE baby brothers!" He was always adamant about that. Five baby brothers and NO sisters. His answer has never changed...until this week. When I ask him if he wants Mommy to have another baby he says, "Yes!". So I ask if he wants a brother or a sister, and he has repeatedly replied, "Yes! A brother and a sister!"
Eli, if I'm having twins, you're grounded.

"Cacation!"

Yes! We finally went on a real, live, family vacation! This just may be a first time ever for Mike. And definitely a first time for our boys. We spent a week in Heaven...some people call it Coronado, CA. It. Was. Awesome. (Minus that huge bridge we had to drive over almost every day. Panic attack much? Yes, yes I do.)

We drove out on Monday, June 4th, and were the last of the party to arrive. Mel and Dave, Steve and Jen, and Jay and Wanda all were staying at the same hotel as us and all got there earlier. They were at the beach, so we headed on over. When we left AZ it was hot, dry, and sunny. By the time we got to our hotel early that evening it was cool, cloudy, and gorgeous! AKA: Heaven. We took Eli and Isaac to see the ocean for the first time ever. Isaac that pretty much everything was cool, and Eli was in love with the sea...of sand, that is. I'm pretty sure his idea of heaven is sand that goes on for ever and ever and ever. He thought the ocean was cool, but cold and big. The sand was just perfect for throwing, running, digging, and flopping around in. Heaven.

Tuesday our little family went off to Sea World. I was hoping Eli would like Sea World, and figured Isaac would just be frustrated with not being able to crawl around. Wrong. We got there just before the Shamu show started so we got to see that first. Isaac was just begging to get down while we waited for the show to start, but once it did, both boys were hooked. (Hehehe, fish pun.) They loved it! They just started at the huge whales jumping around and doing their tricks. Eli had the cutest little awestruck face. The rest of the day was just as good. The boys didn't get naps, but were troopers spending the day at the park, and they really enjoyed seeing all the animals. Plus the weather was amazing, and aside from the mom-fail moment I had where I forgot the sunblock for us, we had an awesome day. (In my defense, it was cold and cloudy the day before when we got there, who knew it would be so gorgeous?) I think both boys' favorite was Shamu, although Eli really seemed to like everything. He LOVED the little kiddie rides, too. Heaven.

On Wednesday, burned and tired, we packed up, with sunblock, and went to the zoo. Another fun day! The boys were a little worn out from the day before and lack of naps, and they didn't get naps again, but really had a fun time at the zoo. I think the hardest part was Isaac getting tired of the stroller. Who could blame him, really? I'm just not strong enough to carry around 19 lbs all day, so our arms were getting a bit tired. Mike was on camera duty; part of this vacay for him was to be able to play with his new camera and take amazing shots, which meant a lot of baby carrying for me. But we again had a long, fun, happy day and saw tons of amazing animals.

We decided to take it easy on Thursday and headed down to the landing on Coronado. We took the ferry across to San Diego, saw the USS Midway (Eli and Mike loved seeing all the planes on the fight deck), and then headed down to Seaport village. This was the first day we spend with the rest of the fam, as we ran in to them here or there while we were out exploring.

Every day this week had been sunny and gorgeous.  Friday was our day to spend at the beach. You can imagine our surprise when we woke up to a cloudy, hazy, chilly Friday morning. We took a stroll around Coronado, had breakfast, caught up with Mel and Dave and their girls, and just as we were deciding what to do the clouds started to clear. So to the beach we went! Steve and his kids were there, and Eli had such a fun time playing with his cousins, building sand castles, chasing waves with me, and loving the ocean. We even went on a walk and found some sea shells, which he treasures. That night we had dinner at the Del, the big hotel across from where we stayed. It was fancy, and the boys were tired, and Isaac hit his mouth on the table and cut his lip, and it was the Best. Dinner. Ever. Seriously, the food was so good. And the kids were good because Eli liked the food and after Isaac hit his head he fell asleep (what, that's not a good thing?). Don't worry, he woke up in time for dessert. It was the perfect ending to our perfect family vacation and we can't wait to go back!

We did linger longer on Saturday after we got all packed up. Met up with Mel and Dave and girls after breakfast and walked around Coronado some more. We got hot chocolate and donuts from a little cafe called Claytons and I think I may never be the same. The hot chocolate was THAT good. Mel and I talk about it almost every time we see each other. Yes, that good. We'll be back!

We had such a fun time, and Eli talks about our "cacation" almost every day. He talks about the HUGE whales, the ocean, the sand, the zoo, and he just can't wait to go back. Neither can we!

Eight Months Awesome

Can you believe Isaac turned 8 months old this week? Where did my baby go? This last month has been really busy for him. He started the month by getting two teeth. Then a cold. And a double ear infection and bronchiolitis. And a round of 3 different medicines to help with all of this. Then he decided to learn to crawl. And pull himself up to standing. And he's even started cruising the furniture a bit and letting go to stand for just a second on his own. What happened to my baby?!

Little Ike is still as happy as ever (and really, I'm the only one that ever calls him Ike, and it's pretty rare) even with all the ear infections and colds and what not. Of course, Mommy's not as happy as she could be because the little guys is still not sleeping through the night...and is still sleeping in our room. Both may be my fault. But we are finally getting Eli his big boy bed and Isaac is getting kicked out! Hello first full night of sleep I've had in well over 8 months...I can't wait!

Isaac is also a chatter box. He just makes noise. And sometimes those noises are "Mamamamamama" or "Dadadadadada". It's pretty cool. He's probably been saying both of these for about a month, but I think just this week he's actually been saying Mama on purpose. Like when he's crying for me. It's adorably sad.

Elijah and Isaac are still best buddies, and getting closer by the minute! Eli loves to tell me, "Did you know that Isaac is my best friend?" He also says that about Mike, too. I hope he feels that way forever! We still play the I Love You game with Eli. He says, "Hey mama, guess what?" And I say, "What?" And he says, "I love you!" It's a pretty awesome game that I hope we play forever. We also say, "Do you know who you are?" and then say, "You are a child of God!". I LOVE that Eli loves these games.

Eli seems to get taller and smarter every day. He has learned to get himself dressed and loves to pick out his clothes and get himself dressed every day. I love seeing him try to get more independent and do things for himself. He's learned to drag the kitchen chairs around the kitchen to help him get things. One day he even got himself a cup out of the cupboard and filled it with water...which spilled...but still, he tried!

This little brainiac is amazing. He loves to find letters everywhere and tries really hard to sound out words...yes, the three year old is learning to read! On his own! He can spell Eli, Mom, Dad, and Car. And can even write his name, and Mom and Dad, too. He loves letters and books and has so much fun learning. Eli also has a very good understanding of numbers. He counts really well and loves to count things--especially when he finds three of something because he is three, too.

He is awesome. Isaac is awesome. And we are so lucky!

Candid Camera

I swear the last day or so I MUST have been on candid camera. That is the only explanation. It's just been "one of those days."

It all started out innocently enough. I made the mistake of enjoying a quiet night on Sunday; the boys actually went to bed right away, so I stayed up a little too late enjoying some me time. Isaac knew better. He's still getting over his ear infections and bronchiolitis, and ended up having a bad night. I nursed him 4 times between 1 and 5am...that's just ridiculous.
He didn't magically get better at 5am. Oh no. That's just when Eli decided to wake up, with the sun. He came stomping into my room, "Mommy! It's all orange and blue and pink outside! Mommy, you want to come see it!" While I do think it's good he can see the beauty in a sunrise, I do NOT want to know about it at 5am. Ever. And that is just the start of our fun day.
The morning wasn't too bad, Eli was just really hyper. The more tired he gets, the more hyper he gets, and the more fussy he gets as well. He stayed in a pretty good and helpful mood, until he didn't. He suddenly just hit a wall and he was done. Then the screaming and crying and, unfortunately, hitting (all of this is done by Eli, not me) started. I managed to get him to sit on the potty and take a nap. Phew. I knew he needed sleep and once in bed he was going to sleep all afternoon! Yes!
Of course, five minutes after Eli goes down, Isaac wakes up from his nap. I'm zombie tired and on-duty again with a wide awake baby. Hyper. Energetic. Happy. And crawling everywhere! Isaac and I had a good time for a bit, but I also felt the pressure of getting other things done. The house is a mess. I need to grade papers and submit final grades for my UOP class. I need to make dinner for a friend who had a baby, and book club is at my house tomorrow, I need to start making treats and get my messy house cleaned.
After a while Isaac is ready for his nap. I can finally tackle some of this house stuff. But first I need to grade papers. That HAS to be done today. And that is when the Internet decides to stop working. I spend nearly an hour trying to get it to work. It does off and on, just long enough for me to think it will work and start pulling some papers to grade, then it stops working. Finally I get the message. The universe is telling me to go take a nap. Done and done!
Not five minutes after I lay down, Eli wakes up. And then Isaac does too. There goes any time or energy I had to get the millions of things done today. Did I mention I'm sooooo tired? Oh well.
I decide to pick up sandwiches for the dinner I had to deliver, so the boys and I head out. That all goes really well, and honestly Eli was really good. I was tired and cranky and I think he knew it. We get home, have our dinner, and as I'm picking Isaac up out of his high chair my hand is all wet. I look, it's covered in poop. For the second time in two days (and it happened again this morning). I should know by now, that's his pooping chair. I scrub up the chair and the baby and just put him in his pajamas for the night.
We all play for a bit, Eli and I practice tracing letters, and Isaac is getting fussy so I go lay him down. All I did was walk back to the room and come back. In that time Eli has colored black crayon all over the table top, table legs, and chair legs. Awesome. I make him clean it up, which really means I clean it up but he has to try and then he has to help me. He's tired and whinny and not too excited about this part. But it's finally bath time!
I get Eli in the bath and decide to take a little potty break as the tub is filling up with water. As I walk out of the toilet I notice the bathroom floor is wet. Really wet. Eli had managed to cover the floor with an inch of water while I was gone. The bath mats are soaked, and several bath towels later I get the floor cleaned up.
The day is almost done! Scriptures and sleepy time for the Eli. But I still have to grade papers, right. As we're reading scriptures a loud BANG! sounds in the bathroom. Seriously, I was scared. I had no idea what it was: either a pipe burst and we've got a gaping hole in the wall or someone is in our backyard and smashed in our bathroom window. Mike goes in to see what has happened and says it was in the cabinet. What? Apparently an old can of aerosol hairspray decided to explode, and take several bottles of lotion and other hair products with it. One giant mess. I wish I would have gotten a picture of it--there were bits of plastic and goop everywhere! I get to scrub a cabinet at 9:30pm. Just what I always wanted. And I still have to grade papers before midnight. I sure know how to procrastinate!
The cabinet finally gets clean and I settle in to grade. Out bounces Eli, who is supposed to be sleeping.  Again. And again. And again. Mike keeps laying him down and he just keeps coming out. But now I'm racing the clock to submit my grades so I can't do much about it. Finally he stays in his room.  We can hear him busting up laughing. Oh well, at least he's in his room. Wrong! Eli comes bouncing out, "Mommy! Brother and I are laughing! Did you hear that? We are laughing so much!" Yep, Eli wasn't in his room, he was in mine. With the light on and his brother now awake. At least they weren't crying. It's now 11pm and not one, but two of my boys are awake. And Eli has pooped his diaper; it's everywhere. I finish my grades and give up. I'm going to bed. Mike takes care of Eli, I get Isaac back to bed and I am done.

But first I do a sweep of my house looking for the candid cameras. The day was so out of the ordinary. The boys (Eli really) did things so unlike them, that I just couldn't believe it was all happening that day. Really, what can I do but laugh...and get some sleep.

Snuggles

One of these boys has been sick all week. Can you tell which one?

Eli wanted me to take a picture of his sad face, too. He's desperately trying not to smile.

Twofer Toother

We've had a busy and not-always-so-fun month.

Isaac started teething. Eli got the flu, big time. Isaac cut a tooth. Thankfully both boys took just enough of a break for us to get some really awesome family pics. Then Isaac cut another tooth. Mike got the flu. Eli got a really bad cold. Isaac gets the really bad cold, and shows signs of yet another tooth trying to break free (Seriously? Cool it on the teething, kid.). Mommy gets the really bad cold. And here we are, just trying to survive it all. I think I've heard Kleenex, Tylenol, and Advil all had record sales this month, thanks to our family! And I'm worried that ear infections are on the horizon for Isaac. Every time he's gotten a cold he's ended up with a double ear infection. He's just getting over his cold this week, and I feel like the Jaws music is eerily haunting the back of my mind, warning me of things to come. Du-duh. Du-duh. Du-duh-du-duh-du-duh!

The exciting part, though, again, not always fun, is that Isaac now has Two Teeth! It's so cute to see them poking out of his bottom gums, but it also makes me a little sad. He's definitely moving on from the new baby stage. I know, he's almost 8 months old and clearly not a newborn anymore. But this just confirms that, and I miss it already. So far he's been really good about not biting, though he does love to chew on my chin still....so weird.

Sleeping

Eli likes to Go, Go, Go! And it is so funny to see when, and where, he ends up crashing.

He actually made it in his bed this time!

Mouth of Babes 2012

Me: Eli, do you want hummus for lunch?
Eli: Yes, Thomas!
Me: No hummus. Do you want hummus?
Eli: Yes! Thomas!
Me: HHHummus.
Eli: Thomas!
Me: Say it like this hhhhhhhhhhhhhhummus.
Eli: Thohhhhhhhhhhh-thomas!
Me: Yes, Thomas. Do you want Thomas for lunch.
Eli: YES!

Eli in the bath. "Mom, I need to get out. My fingers are going up and down and up and down." Me, "Do you mean they're all wrinkly?" Eli, "Um, yes. They are all wrinkly. What happened they are all wrinkly?"

Update 3/6
Eli trying to pedal his trike backwards: "Mom, it's not working. I think the batteries are run down. It needs new batteries."
Me: "Eli, it doesn't use batteries. You are the battery."
Eli: "Ha. You're funny, Mom."

Update 4/1
Eli came running in from outside with something in his hands.  It was a clump or dirt/rock or maybe a chunk of mulch.
"Look what I found, Mom. It's a dirt chicken!"
I was laughing so hard I couldn't even explain it to Mike. He meant a chicken nugget! Heehee...get it? Well, I thought it was hilarious.

Update 4/4
This is how Eli sings Old McDonald:
Mickey Donald had a farm
Eli-Eli-Oh!

Update 5/15
Eli: Mom, can you make me popcorn?
Me: Maybe I can in a little bit. I have to do a couple of things first.
(I sit at my computer to take care of some Primary things. Isaac, who is sick, starts crying. I go back to help him get back to sleep. Then my phone buzzes, another text about Primary. Finally, I sit back down to take care of the original Primary things.)
Eli: Mom, you did a couple things. I need you to make me popcorn now.
Me: I still need to do a couple things. I didn't do them yet.
Eli: Yes. You went to help Isaac and you looked at your phone. That was a couple things. You said a couple things then you would make me popcorn.

Sometimes I wish this kid wasn't so smart...

Update 6/19
Eli is trying to tell me something but he can't remember the word for it. I have no idea what he is talking about and have been waiting for him to figure it out. This is our conversation.
Eli: Mom, can you tell me what it is?
Me: Eli, I don't know what you're talking about. I need you to tell me.
Eli: No, Mom. You can tell me. What is it?
Me: Eli, I can't tell you. I don't know what word you are thinking of. I need you to tell me.
Eli (getting frustrated): No, Mom. Just tell me! I need you to tell me!
Me: Eli, I don't know. I can't read your mind so I can't tell you. Only you can read you mind.
Eli (laughing): No, Mom. I can't read my mind. I don't know how to read. Only you can. You're silly Mom.

Update 7/31
This is a conversation I had with Eli right after Mike left for work this morning.
Eli: Mom, why does Daddy have to work so much?
Me: So he can make lots of money so we can have a nice house to live in and yummy food to eat.
Eli: I don't want to live in a nice house or eat yummy food. I just want Daddy to come home.

Update 8/6
(Eli sitting on the potty.) "Mom! I made poops! You need to come wipe me!"
(As I walk in to the bathroom.) "The poops are really stinky! Don't breath, okay Mom. They will make you throw up."
(As he's getting cleaned up.) "Are you going to throw up? I'm sorry my poops are so stinky. I don't want you to throw up."
That boy is watching out for his pregnant mommy . . . and he might be scarred for life, too.

Update  8/14
For Eli's first day of preschool today he was supposed to bring something for show and tell. I was explaining this to him last night and told him he can bring his favorite thing to show his friends, then listed things like cars, books, toys, or stuffed animals. He thought about it for a minute and said, "Can I bring Isaac? He's my favorite." Proudest mommy moment of my life.

Update 8/16
Eli: Mom, did you know Chuck's mom is yellow? (This is in reference to the Chuck and  Friends show he watches on Netflix.)
Me: Hmm . . . you're right. What color is your mommy?
Eli: Well, you're white. Maybe kinda white.
Me: What color are you?
Eli: I'm kinda white too.
Me: What color is daddy?
Eli: He's kinda white with a hairy mouth.

Update 11/12
Tonight at dinner Eli told us he was a frog, then asked what frogs eat for dinner. We told him they eat flies and bugs. He thought that was pretty gross and said, "But people don't eat bugs, right?" "No," I said, "but we do eat cows." He laughed and said, "No Mom, people don't eat animals. We just eat this stuff." Then he pointed to his plate . . . which had a hamburger on it. I decided not to burst his bubble and tell him he was eating a cow.

Update 12/9
Eli has been doing this thing where he shakes his bum at us . . . usually his naked bum. Especially to Mike, who does it back to him (only Mike is actually dressed). Apparently Isaac has discovered this 'game.'
I'm working at my computer when Isaac starts yelling, "Maaaaaama! Maaaama!" Once I finally look over to see him he immediately leans over and wiggles his bum. Then he looks up, smiles at me, and runs off. Hilarious! He was facing me, so he doesn't have the whole concept down yet, but it is so funny and cute to see him try this.

Update 12/11
Eli: I'm going to follow you wherever you go . . . because you're my mom."
Sure, he was talking about follow me around the house with the mop bucket while I mopped, but the way he said it sure made me stop and think. I hope I lead him in the right direction!

Update 12/12
Eli comes running up to me: Mom, listen to this!
I listen.
He toots. Smiles. And runs off.
Yep, I he's a boy.

Growing Boys

I was able to do Elijah's three-year check up and Isaac's six-month check up together. I was worried how it would go, but it actually worked out well. The doctor did a great job of having Eli be the big brother and show his baby brother how to do everything. Eli liked doing that and I think it helped him not be so nervous. He did a great job! He even had to get a shot, which I didn't realize, and didn't cry or fight or anything. So we went and got ice cream after the appointment. Hey, I deserved some, too!

The one funny thing was the nurse who brought us back. She was in her last week of training and was specializing in pediatric care, but she sure did not seem happy with my kids. And I am not biased here, I will admit when they are bad, but they were being so good! They weren't crying or anything. Eli was just shy, and the nurse seemed to get really annoyed when he didn't want to do what she said right away (stand on the scale or up the the height-measurer-thingy. Yes, that is the technical term.) She had no bedside manner with the kids at all. Excuse me, miss, but my kid hasn't been to the doctor in a year, he's only three, and a bit shy, and some strange lady barking orders at him and getting mad at him isn't going to help much. You sure this is the right career choice for you? Me neither...

Anyway, my boys survived the mean nurse and had a pretty good time. Here are their stats.

Elijah at three years:
Height:  39 1/2 in.
Weight: 30 lb 4 oz

Eli is still tall and skinny and super adorable. He's around the 90th percentile for height and just above the 25th percentile for weight. But he is super strong, so he doesn't look super skinny, just nice and lean. Can I look like him, too?

Isaac at six months:
Height: 26 1/4 in.
Weight: 16 lb 11 oz
Head: 16 3/4

Isaac's height is right at the 50th percentile, and his weight is between the 25 and 50th percentile, which is funny because people like to call him a chubby baby. His head is tiny, below the 25th percentile, so I think he just looks well proportioned compared to most babies, who have giant heads. He is absolutely beautiful. Seriously. People stop me all the time and comment on how pretty of a baby he is.
